About the Mercedes A-Class

The so-called 'Baby Benz' got off to a shaky start when it was introduced in 1997, famously toppling over during handling tests conducted by Swedish magazine Teknikens Värld. Mercedes swiftly recalled the early cars, fitting them with Electronic Stability Control and tweaked suspension to resolve the issue at acost of DM 300 million

Look past that one faux pas and the first-generation A-Class was a revolutionary machine. It incorporated such innovations as a 'sandwich floor,' which prevented the engine and gearbox from intruding into the passenger compartment in an accident. It was also one of the most space-efficient cars to come along decades, offering more rear legroom than a Bentley of the period despite being almost two metres shorter.

For Mercedes' first ever attempt at a front-wheel-drive hatchback, it was genius. But there was an issue: it looked a bit odd. Unique and interesting, yes, but not beautiful or elegant - at odds with the three-pointed star on the front grille, a badge which stood for understated luxury.

So, despite the car's obvious qualities and technical innovations, Mercedes swallowed their pride with the subsequent iteration of the A-Class. Arriving in 2004, it still looked a little quirky but much less so - and under the skin it was more conventional.

It may have lost some of the original car's character, but it was still supremely practical - and its less out-there styling won it more fans on the forecourts. When It came time to replace that model in 2012 though, Mercedes decided to totally reinvent the A-Class formula in a bid to win the hearts of younger buyers in particular.

The resulting third generation model did away with the slab-sided looks of its forebears and adopted more 'Golf-like' proportions. It wasn't a pioneering engineering marvel like the first-generation A-Class was, but it was infinitely more desirable.

Finally, the A-Class had the looks to match that badge - and Mercedes was clearly proud of the new model's appearance, as it made the front grille emblem larger than ever before. Arguably, the interior was the best bit of the third-generation A-Class; it looked just like its bigger brother, the C-Class, and offered impressive levels of luxury and refinement.

In terms of space and practicality, while not as versatile as the class-leading first and second-generation models (which effectively became small vans with the rear seats folded down), the A-Class remained a worthy contender for families.

Its lower roofline and more athletic stance made it much sharper to drive, too - and there was even an AMG model. The A45 AMG broke new ground for hot hatches, offering a whopping 355 bhp to all four wheels. Performance was out of this world, the car taking just 4.6 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standstill.

With the third-generation A-Class Mercedes hit on a winning formula, and sales reached highs never enjoyed by the previous two models. Now you can benefit from the German marque's efforts on the second-hand market. Browse our Mercedes A-Class used cars online and contact us today to book a viewing and test drive.

Why buy a used Mercedes A-Class in Peterborough?

Mercedes' A-Class is now a very desirable small car. Some of its best features include:

• Attractive styling

The A-Class has to be one of the most striking and attractive cars in its class, and has proven to be very desirable

• Tech-laden cabin

Luxury and technology aren't in short supply inside the A-Class, with an Apple CarPlay-compatible infotainment system becoming standard-fit on facelift models

• Plenty of choice

You'll be spoilt for choice if you're in the market for a used Mercedes A Class: there were 17 engine and gearbox combinations offered and four trim levels

• Fuel efficiency

Diesel A-Classes in particular are extraordinarily light on fuel, the A180d achieving a claimed combined economy figure of 80.7 mpg

Which model should you choose?

The A-Class entered its fourth generation in 2018, but the majority of examples on the used market today are 2013-2018 (third generation) models.

Fortunately for second-hand buyers, the A-Class sold really well in third generation form, so there are plenty of cars to choose from. Four main trim levels were offered: SE, Sport, AMG-Line and AMG.

Even the base SE model benefited from a 7" sat-nav and infotainment screen. This was enlarged by an inch on Sport models and above, while AMG-Line models sharpened the car's exterior styling with a bodykit and sportier wheels.

If you opt for the full-fat AMG model you'll be in for a treat. The A45 AMG's turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine outputs a whopping 355 bhp and delivers blistering performance, which is kept under control by an all-wheel-drive system and stiffer, lowered suspension. It's not the most comfortable machine, but it has enough poke to show some supercars a clean pair of heels.

AMG models aside, there was a range of efficient diesel and petrol engines to choose from. The most frugal of these was the A180d, which achieved a fuel economy figure of 80.7 mpg in NEDC testing; it also boasted low emissions figures, making it tax exempt if registered before 1 April 2017.

In 2015 the car received a facelift which, besides bringing the exterior styling bang up-to-date, improved the ride quality and ushered in revised interior trim. Apple CarPlay also made its debut, becoming standard-fit on all models.
