Much like rival manufacturers BMW and Audi, Mercedes-Benz's range can leave any car buyer feeling spoilt for choice. Beginning with the compact A-Class and ending with the super luxurious S Class saloon, there's plenty to pick from - especially when you factor in the SUV models. Which one is right for you?

Mercedes-Benz A-Class

The A-Class is the smallest model in the Mercedes-Benz range, but much like the Audi A1 and BMW 1 Series, it offers impressive levels of equipment and comfort. It got off to a shaky start in the late '90s, the first generation being infamously top-heavy, but the handling issues were soon rectified and the car went on to become a strong seller. Subsequent models were much more conventionally-proportioned, the third generation model being aimed at younger buyers with a totally revised appearance.

• Distils everything that Mercedes-Benz is famous for into one small package, offering plenty of tech and comfort features
• 2013-on models have a more conventionally-shaped body, resulting in a lower centre of gravity and better handling
• Despite being the entry-level model in the range, it's still practical and spacious enough inside

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Consistently one of Mercedes-Benz's best selling models, the C-Class has become a prominent fixture on Britain's roads since it first hit them in the 1990s. The fourth-generation C-Class looks much different, however, Mercedes-Benz adopting a curvier design language in time for its launch in 2014. It's since been replaced, but still looks current and makes a great used buy.

• 'Baby S-Class' styling gives it a distinctly upmarket image, no matter the variant (saloon, estate, coupe and convertible options are available)
• More of a focus on comfort than its rivals, with ride quality the top priority as opposed to handling...

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Mercedes-Benz's rival to the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6, the E-Class has always sold well. It slots directly between the C-Class and S-Class, occupying the mid-range spot in the lineup. Accordingly, it's larger than the C and smaller than the S-Class, and the level of equipment and ride comfort on offer is a significant step up from the C-Class.

• Saloon, estate, coupe and convertible models available, making it a particularly versatile model
• Offers most of the comfort of the S-Class, though has less tech
• Huge range of engines to choose from - the E-Class can vary enormously depending on the trim level and which option boxes have been ticked, from German taxi-spec diesels to fiendishly powerful AMG V8 monsters

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

Based on the more conventional three-box E-Class saloon, the CLS-Class is essentially a four-door coupe, with a longer, sloping roofline. The elegant, aerodynamic bodywork does rob the CLS of a little rear headroom and boot space, but for many the trade-off is worth it. The previous generation CLS was available in 'shooting brake' estate form as well, though this was discontinued from 2018.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

It has a history of leading the way when it comes to in-car entertainment and safety features; often way ahead of the competition, some features present on 20-year-old S-Classes are only now finding their way into mass market vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class/Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Originally named the M-Class, Mercedes-Benz's popular SUV was renamed the GLE in 2015. Launched in the late 1990s, the first-generation M-Class is considered to be one of the forerunners of the premium SUV boom, pre-dating the likes of the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne.
