About Peugeot Cars

The world's oldest surviving car manufacturer, Peugeot put the finishing touches on its first automobile all the way back in 1889. Though Benz & Cie made the world's first petrol-powered vehicle three years earlier, the firm was later swallowed up by Daimler to form Mercedes-Benz - so technically no longer exists.

That alone is an impressive thing to have going as a car manufacturer, but it's not Peugeot's only claim to fame. In the 130-plus years it's been building cars, Peugeot has released some impressive car designs. In the ‘60s it began to develop a fashion-forward image thanks to machines like the 404 Cabriolet, one of many memorable drop tops in the French manufacturer's extensive back catalogue.

Its successor, the 504, was named European Car of the Year in 1969 and went on to sell over 3.7 million units. During its lengthy production run - which didn't end until 2006 - it became a favourite of African and South American motorists, its resilience and affordable price making it a winner in tough rural environments.

1983 was another big year for Peugeot, as it saw the launch of the legendary 205 hatchback. This wonderful little car transformed the company's fortunes, and continually traded places with the Renault 5 as France's best-selling car throughout the 1980s. Its success wasn't just down to its design brilliance, but Peugeot's marketing intuition. Peugeot made the brave decision to enter the Renault 5 into motorsports, which paid off big time as highly-modified versions of the car went on to win the World Rally Championship twice.

It's successor, the 206, was also a high achiever. Peugeot shifted over 7 million of them, and they're still a common sight on the roads today - a testament to their low running costs and robustness.

In 2009, Peugeot's diesel-powered 908 prototype racer took the chequered flag at the Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race, beating German rival Audi to emerge victorious. Sincethen, the manufacturer has gradually redesigned its range of cars to make them more desirable and exciting to drive and look at - leaving second-hand buyers with no shortage of attractive options.

Peugeot 208

The 208 is the latest addition to Peugeot's lineage of successful small cars. Far removed from its great grandad, the 205, in terms of luxury and performance, it still manages to exude a similar charisma and charm that undoubtedly makes many of its rivals green with envy. The 208 has more going for it than that, though; it's available with a wide range of trim and engine options, ranging from an economical 1.0-litre unit to a potent 1.6 in the GTi.

Key features:

  • Easy on the wallet thanks to economical engines and affordable servicing
  • Generous equipment levels even in base form
  • High-quality, attractive interior design

Peugeot 2008

You can't have failed to notice a dramatic rise in the number of small SUVs on our roadsin recent years - they're everywhere. Not one to be left out, the 2008 is Peugeot's crack at producing a compact crossover. Based on the 208, the 2008 has a higher, more rugged-looking stance.

Key features:

  • More spacious and practical than its conventional hatchback counterpart, the 208
  • Running costs remain low
  • Good reliability record

Peugeot 3008

A halfway-house between SUV and people carrier, the 3008 proved a hit with families. This spacious machine represents great value as a second-hand purchase, and is more affordable to run than many of its competitors thanks to a particularly efficient lineup ofpetrol and diesel engines.

Key features:

  • Great value for money
  • Not short on cabin space
  • Affordable to run

Peugeot RCZ

The RCZ looks unlike anything else on the road. While the familiar Peugeot family face adorns its front end, the side profile and rear three-quarter view are nothing if not striking. A double-bubble roof, retractable rear spoiler and distinctive window line makethe RCZ coupe a design classic of the future.

Key features:

  • Fantastic styling
  • Enjoyable driving experience
  • Good blend of performance and efficiency
