About MINI cars

The year is 1959. Britons are driving around in pedestrian, often oddly-proportioned and space-inefficient cars - and that's if they're driving one at all. There are plenty of cars out there to choose from, but for most families they're out of reach (and many of them aren't particularly desirable, either).

Two years earlier, a crack team of British Motor Corporation (BMC) designers, led by genius engineer Alec Issigonis, set out to change that. What they came up with would also go on to change the way family cars were designed and constructed forever.

The original Mini was unveiled to the world in August 1959, and shocked the motoring press. Issigonis and his team had ripped up the rulebook, mounting the engine sideways with drive transmitted to the front wheels - the blueprint for most family cars on the roads today. Though this had been done before, the Mini was the first car to really make the configuration stick - especially in Britain.

BMC's baby was affordable to buy, surprisingly spacious and fantastic to drive; then-Formula One constructor John Cooper soon got involved, spawning the now legendary Cooper sporting variant.

Bowing out in 2000 after over 40 years of continuous production, the classic Mini left behind an prodigious legacy. Imagine, then, the pressure the designers of the New MINI were feeling when it made its debut a year later.

Now in the hands of BMW, MINI was split from Rover Group to form its own brand, the German marque aiming to capitalise on the original car's charm and quirky styling with a 21st century reinterpretation. British motorists certainly seemed to like it, the first-generation new MINI selling in great numbers and paving the way for today's range of models.

Entering its second generation in 2006 and third generation in 2014, the MINI hatch - now available with five doors - has been joined in the range by the Convertible, Clubman estate and Countryman SUV. This era of MINI has taken the brand further upmarket; interiors are more luxurious and tech-laden than previous models, but the MINI remains a joy to drive despite being more comfortable and spacious than ever before.

MINI Hatch

A far cry from the original Mini of 1959 - which was designed to offer bargain basement family transport - today's MINI Hatch is a premium car with no shortage of onboard technology and creature comforts. Now in its third generation, which introduced a five-door variant for the first time, the Hatch is more practical than ever and its styling remains distinctively MINI.
